246. the vitality of the church in the 21st century is connected to the fact that she has developed a new understanding of the good and the right and has made her mission the promotion of justice. she must continue to promote new and creative forms of solidarity, justice and peace, both in the sense of continuing her mission of love for her neighbour, and as the means for responding to the various forms of violence and injustice, especially those which come from the new technologies. we should also continue to work to foster a true dialogue, which is not only fraternal and open to the other, but which is also firmly based on what the other says. the church can make a contribution to this dialogue in different ways. she can support it through her participation in civil society, through her work for peace and social justice, in her promotion of interreligious dialogue and in her active commitment to the protection of human rights. 18. the world needs true friendship. the world needs friendship. since i was a child, the phrase has always held a special meaning for me. i have always been puzzled, though, by the fact that the word friendship does not appear in the bible. what is it that is so important about friendship? let us begin by defining it. according to the dictionary, friendship is a cordial, benevolent, peaceful, amicable and generally reciprocal companionship. a friendship is based on trust, on a friendship built on love, based on a love which does not think of itself as selfish but which is a free response to the other. friendship is a gift of the other, something given for our sake, so that we can be happier and better. friendship is not something one can demand of the other. it is not something one seeks for himself, but which he seeks from the other. friendship is based on a respect for the other, and not just on a will to dominate. it is based on a will to live together with the other in freedom and mutual respect. it is based on a will to understand the other. friendship is rooted in the heart, but it has its origins in the will of both. friendship means understanding the other. it means that in friendship we understand that we are not alone in our pain and in our joys. it means that we are together with the other in our joys and in our sorrows. it means that in friendship we help one another, that we are not afraid to stand up for one another, to defend one another, to open up to one another.
